一（いち）がつくので長男、しかし、名前の由来は当時放送されていた黒柳徹子のラジオドラマの主人公の名前をとったそうで安易である。
ついでに言うが妹の名は決めかねて当時１歳の私にくじを引かせたそうである。妹は今も納得していない。
もひとつついでに妹は茂子といって札幌市中央区南3西13丁目で『千両箱』という居酒屋をやってますのでどうぞ、ご利用ください。私の名前を出すと何らかの特典があります。が、叩き出される恐れもあります。 まあこんな親にしてこの子アリです。
北海道空知郡奈井江町出身。石狩平野のど真ん中、幼少時代は文化、芸術とはあまり縁のない生活だったが、健康で立派な田舎もんだった。小学生、中学生時代は音楽より絵に興味を示し、美術の成績は9年間オール5、美術コンクール入賞の常連だった。しかし、15才の時ビートルズを聞いてからギターを弾きはじめ、高校時代はロックバンドを結成、クリームやディープパープルなどのコピーバンドで地元のコンテストや学園祭で演奏する。ふつうここで非行に走るのだが、おおらかな北海道の田舎ではその心配は全くなかった。
しかし、相変わらず絵が好きなのと、父親に「楽譜が読めなきゃ音楽なんかじゃ食えん」と言われ、（絵のほうがもっと喰えないじゃないか！）東京デザイナー学園に進むが、隣のヤツが数段私より上手だったので、あっさり絵はあきらめ、またロックバンドをやり始め、中退。
その後ブルースに興味を持ち当時ブルースの盛んな京都へ。が、あまりに勝手に弾いていたので、見かねたその当時のバンドメンバー（成瀬秀之：キーボード奏者、現在関西で活躍中）の勧めでアン・ミュージックスクールに進み3年間、音楽理論と鈴木淳氏にアコースティックベースを学ぶ。成績優秀、特待生で卒業。
この時期、神戸のクラブ、キャバレー、ディスコでプロ生活スタート。同時にジャズに開眼。のち鈴木氏の勧めで上京。ホテルラウンジのピアノトリオで一年間演奏する。（この一年間は徹底的にしごかれ、いい想い出なし。）あまりに酷かったのでジャズに嫌気がさし、札幌に移り、ジュネスオーケストラでクラシックを演奏したりして(NHKテレビで全国放送された）半年ほどジャズから遠ざかるが、とってもうまかったので、友人の勧め（おだてられ）でジャズライブ活動再開する。なかでも定期的に行なったフリースタイルを含めたベースソロのライブは新聞等に取り上げられ注目を集めた。またこの時期 札幌交響楽団首席奏者、藤沢光雄氏に師事。
1985年ドラムスの猪俣猛トリオ（西直樹：ピアノ）に抜擢され再び上京。同トリオにて全国のオーケストラ、吹奏楽団とも共演する。またジャズでは大友義雄グループを中心に西直樹、遠藤律子、高橋知己、佐藤達哉、三好功郎、黒田京子らのグループはじめ多くのミュージシャンと共演、多種多様な音楽を演奏、活躍する。また、池田篤、椎名豊を擁した自己のカルテットではオリジナル曲を中心に演奏する。
1991年には、この時期に活躍中の若手ミュージシャンを集めて、全曲オリジナルのアルバム（You Can Touch My Heartstrings・自主制作）を発表、好評を博す。
1992 年永住権取得を機会にニューヨークに移住。シーラ・ジョーダン、ヘレン・メリル、またアキラ・タナ率いるアジアン・アメリカンジャズアンサンブル、グレッグ・マーフィートリオ、アーニー・ローレンスグループ、ハル高内トリオで演奏する。またさまざまなセッションで活躍。
1994年猪俣の率いるＪＪＪＡＳのツアーに参加、カーネギーホールで演奏。その後メキシコを楽旅。10月には、マイク・スターンを迎えてのリーダーアルバム（Something Close To Love・キング・KICJ222）をリリース。
1995年帰国、佐藤允彦、中川昌三、辛島文雄トリオ、1996年、木住野佳子トリオで全国ツアー。1997年、猪俣猛でインドネシア、大山日出男カルテットで韓国ツアー。
1999年10月、全曲オリジナルのベース独奏アルバム（Old Diary・サウンドヒルズレコード：TLCD1001）をリリース。嶋津健一ダブルダブルベースセッションなど アコースティック・ベースの魅力にスポットを当てた活動も展開し始める。
2001年、佐藤允彦とのデュオアルバム（Duet 独ナゲル・へイヤー2017）が全米全欧でリリースされ、国際的評価も得る。
2002年、佐藤允彦トリオ（Tipo CABEZA）、富樫雅彦（JJ Spirits）に参加。
2004年、5枚目のリーダーアルバム、(B-HOT CREATIONS / EndressJourney ローヴィング・スピリッツ RKCJ-2012）をリリース。
2005年、佐藤允彦(Saifa)とドイツ・メールスジャズフェスティバル、オランダ(BIMHUIS)に出演。 アラキネマ(去年ノ夏、青ノ時代)参加。また、(B-HOT CREATIONS / SET ME FREE ローヴィング・スピリッツ RKCJ-2017)をリリース。
2006年、ライブアルバム(Live in Northland / KATO-SATOH-TAPPY ローヴィング・スピリッツ RKCJ-2020）をリリース。
現在は自己のグループ（B-HOT CREATIONS：田中信正、斉藤良、NOBIE）をはじめ、佐藤允彦トリオ(Tipo Cabeza)、市川秀男トリオ、鈴木和郎トリオ、嶋津健一トリオ、井上ゆかりトリオ、村上寛トリオのレギュラーである。
Born in Naie-town, Hokkaido on March 20, 1958, Shinichi Kato started playing the bass at the age of 15 when he was absorbed in listening to the Beatles' songs. He soon formed a rock band and played at some contests and school festivals in his local town. Interested in blues music after graduating from his high school, he moved to Kyoto where at that time the music was popular. Recommended by one of his band members, he went to "Ann Contemporary Music School" which he graduated from as an honor student. There he studied music theories and acoustic bass from Mr. Jun Suzuki for three years. Mr. Suzuki suggested he go to Tokyo, and Shinichi did his performance in a piano trio for a year there.
After the stay in Tokyo, he moved back to Sapporo, Hokkaido. He participated in many music activities such as playing classic music in Geneva Orchestra and holding some jazz live concerts. Among all those activities, it was his solo bass live concert including free-style performance, which turned out to be held regularly that attracted attention from a press and other media. At the same time, he started to study under Mitsuo Fujisawa, the leading player of Sapporo Symphony Orchestra.
Selected for a member by Takeshi Inomata, who forms his own trio and plays himself the drum, Shinichi went to Tokyo. In the trio, he performed with orchestras and brass bands throughout Japan. In jazz arena, he worked together with many musicians such as Naoki Nishi, Ritsuko Endo, Tatsuya Sato, Isao Miyoshi, and Kyoko Kuroda, and as the core of his joint session movement he played with Yoshio Otomo, which manifests his diversifying music career. To foster Atsushi Ikeda and Yutaka Shiina, the members of his quartet, he also played some original tunes.
In 1991 he released his own album with all original songs including "You Can Touch My Heartstrings" produced by Shinichi that received favorable reviews.
Having got a permanent residency in the States in 1992, he moved to New York. In New York he performed in all kinds of groups like Asian American Jazz Ensemble leading Akira Tana, Sheera Jodan and Helen Merrill, Greg Murphy Trio and Arnie Lawrence Group. He was also active in various sessions. He participated in JJJAS tour led by Inomata in 1994, performing in Carnegie Hall, and then visited Mexico.
Having Mike Starn as a guest player, he released a leader album; "Something Close To Love" by King Record (KICJ222).
After he returned back to Japan in 1995, he joined the national tour in Fumio Karashima trio and Yoshiko Kishino trio in 1996, the Indonesian tour with Takeshi Inomata and the Korean tour in Hideo Oyama tour in 1997. At present he manages performance in his own group "B-Hot Creations" and a number of sessions with Masahiko Sato, Takao Maeda and so on. He also works as a regular bassist and for Hideo Ichikawa trio, Hidefumi Toki quartet, Yoshio Otomo group, Kayoko Miyama, Kazuo Suzuki trio and Masaya Hashimoto trio, and as a supporting musician for Circus, the chorus group, in Naoki Nishi trio. He has been a radio personality on "What's Jazz" of FM Iruma since December 1998. He released his latest bass solo album with all original songs; "Old Diary" by Sound Hills (TLCD1001) in October 1999.
2001 He released duet album to all over the world with great piano player Masahiko Sato "Duet" by nagel heyer in Germany (nagel heyer 2017).
2002, He joined Masahiko Sato’s trio (Tipo Cabeza) and Masahiko Togashi’s band (J J spirits).
2004, He got a fifth leader album, "B-Hot Creations / Endless Journey” released by Roving Sprits (RKCJ-2012).

Including Norio Maeda, Hideo Ichikawa, Kazuo Suzuki, Kenichi Shimazu, a trio with Yukari Inoue, He participate in the music of the Film, musical, and the activity lasts for the many divergences. He has a beautiful tone and delicacy, the existence that the Japanese music circles cannot lack in the various performances-style beyond the genre now.
